Holding Fox to the Fire

Promoting Intellectual Honesty

There is an epidemic in the world today.  People are not open to the possibility of being in error.  They hold their beliefs within a clenched fist, unwilling and therefore unable to see possible errors in their respective ideologies.  It is not until individuals are willing to place their beliefs on the chopping block of critical scrutiny and rigorous examination that error can be hacked in half and tossed in the fire of falsehood, and truth can be given an opportunity to prove and demonstrate its ability to withstand the fiercest strike.

We should be the ones who set the bar high for this type of radical intellectual integrity.  As genuine truth seekers, we need not be afraid of placing our beliefs to the test or allowing them to be challenged.  If our beliefs are well founded, they will be reinforced and strengthened.  Conversely, if our beliefs are shown to be weak and faulty, in so far as truth is our objective, we will be thankful to see the errors in our own thinking, thus freeing us to search afresh for what is true and right.  Let us strive to be responsible thinkers, open to critique, reasonable, reverent, and painfully honest.

Thank You
by: Brian Wright

One of the greatest things that one person can do for another is to cause them to think.

Whenever someone causes me to think about what I believe, they have done me a great service and I will thank them.

If someone persuades me that there is something wrong about what I believe, they have done me a great service.  I will change my belief and I will thank them.

If someone fails to persuade me that there is something wrong about what I believe, they have done me a great service.  I will be strengthened in what I believe and I will thank them.

HT Principles

1.
The search of truth is done better collaboratively.

2.
Our understandings are provisional and tentative.

3.We desire to reserve and suspend judgment and merely collect data in areas that we are unfamiliar with.

4.We strive to be respectful, sensitive, considerate and open-minded, yet always carefully examining the evidence presented.

5.

We will inevitably make better and more informed decisions by concerning ourselves with the search for truth.
