Truth Concerning Religion

Religion is one of those areas of our lives that is deeply personal.  We naturally identify our ideas about God, or the lack thereof, with reality.  Problems arise when we realize that other people who are just as devout have different conceptions and ideas about God.  These problems are only compounded when our different conceptions of God are couched in terms of a personal relationship.  If this personal relationship is real, why is it that such vast differences exist in our perspectives about God?  What is the truth?  Who possesses the truth?  The Roman Catholic Church claims to have an infallible interpreter of Scripture in the church and tradition.  Mormons have a living prophet who can speak for God.  The Jehovah's Witnesses have the Watch Tower Society to delineate the true meaning of the Bible.  What about the rest of us?  Should our conflicting experiences really be our guide?  Much freedom is found when we realize that our beliefs do not change reality.  The more intellectually honest and authentic we are about these questions, the better off we are.  Conceiving oneself as a truth-seeker provides the framework in which it is possible to change perspectives and retain an identity.  May the articles and links provided aid you in your journey.

Did Jesus Believe in the Trinity?
Millions of Jews and a billion Muslims have been told that they have to believe that Jesus is the one God to be saved.  More nuanced apologists say that although it is not essential, this so-called truth cannot be denied.  The vast majority of Jews and Muslims have refused to believe Trinitarian doctrine including the idea that Jesus is YHWH (God Almighty).  Did Jesus ever claim to be YHWH, the one God of Israel?  What is Jesus’ relation to YHWH?  Click the face of Jesus to read an article which considers modern scholarship on this issue.

  What in
  the Hell is
  Hell?
  The
  traditional
  dogma of
  hell as
  eternal
  torment has
  to be one of
  the most
grotesque and morally reprehensible teachings ever articulated.  Ironically, Steve Scianni argues it never actually appears in the Scriptural text. In probably the best paper ever written on the subject, Steve thourghly examines every major text used in support of the orthodox dogma and lays out an utterly compelling case that the biblical texts teache that the wicked are totally destroyed.  Judge for yourself.  Click the flames.

Also read his devestating precpet-upon-precept critique of Cal Baptist professor Chris Morgan, one of the most active defenders of the traditional dogma of eternal conscious torment.

Does God Take Risks?
Is everything that happens in the course of history a certainty or a possibility?  Did God plan every event in the history of the world? Many theologians are saying that the future is open, made up of the choices that both we and God make.  Read a provocative paper the challenges the traditional understanding of God. Just click the lightning bolt.

  Did Augustine Vacillate
  Between Heretical
  Explanations of the Trinity?
  It is doubtful that Western
  Christian Trinitarian theology
  has been more influenced by
  anyone other than Augustine.  It
is my contention, that many of
  Augustine's statements about the
  trinity in De Trinitas sadly
  vacillate between tritheism (belief
in three Gods) and modalistic monarchianism (God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are one person), leaving the reader with only a contradictory proposition.  This paper received an "audacious claim" from a seminary professor, but in the end, the paper stood on its own terms.  Click Augustine to read the evidence.

What Was Good About
the Good News?
Two millenia have passed since Jesus traversed the earth.  We have heard a lot about Jesus, but what about the message he brought.  Did Jesus actually expect the kingdom of God to come during his lifetime?  Click Jesus to read a rare proposal which may lead to renewed interest in a subject filled with Sunday school assumptions.
